Indigenous People's Day – Native Lecture Series
Launched in 2015, the UW-Platteville Indigenous Peoples’ Day Lecture series welcomes Native American voices to the university and enhances the way Indigenous histories are taught by hosting Native American speakers that present topics on contemporary Indian Country.
In 2023, Gary Besaw from the Menominee Nation presented on joint tribal and intertribal efforts to combine Indigenous teachings with modern environmentally acceptable tools and practices. His presentation was titled Menominee Foodways: Creating a Culturally Vibrant Food System for Kaeyas Mamaceqtawak and Great Lakes Nations.
Native November
November is National Native American Heritage month. Various events will be planned on both the UW-Platteville and Baraboo campuses. Please check the university events calendar or contact the Tribal Liaison or Tribal Task Force for updates.
The Land Ethic/Land Ethic Practicum
Professor Laura Dev’s Geography 2370/2380 course on the UW-Platteville campus provides an overview of environmental ethics, environmental history, and land politics with special emphasis on Indigenous land relations. This course aims to help students deepen their connection with the land and grow their knowledge and skills for participating in dialogue about the role of land and place in relationship to societies today.
