Location

The Circulation Desk is located on the library's main floor.

LIBRARY LOAN PERIODS

Most circulating materials circulate for 28 days. Some items have shorter loan periods or are non-circulating.

RENEWAL PERIODS

Most materials, if not needed by someone else, may be renewed. Renewals can be done in person with your Pioneer Passport, over the telephone by calling 608.342.1679, or by accessing your personal circulation record, My Account in Search@UW.

HOLD/RECALL

If a title you need is checked out ("Use Get IT to request via UW System libraries" will display under the title), access your personal circulation record to have a Hold/Recall placed on the item. Contact the Circulation Desk if you have any questions.

The person who has the material will be sent a recall notice requesting that the item be returned. Once the item is returned, you will be notified that it is available at the Circulation Desk or by checking your personal circulation record.

Note: Unless an item is needed for reserve, a recall will not be sent until the original borrower has had the material for at least 14 days.

ITEM NOT FOUND

If you are unable to locate the item you need, ask at the Circulation Desk. If an item is checked out, you can place a hold on it.

Failure to return library material

Once an item becomes 28 days overdue, the borrower will be billed for the replacement cost of the material plus a per-item processing fee. Two overdue items or a total of fines and fees that exceed $210.00 will block all library privileges. Blocks will remain until the account is paid in full. Failure to pay fines and fees may result in blocked transcripts or other collection procedures. Fines and fees are non-refundable.

RESERVE POLICY AND PROCEDURES

What may be placed on Reserve:

  • Books from any of the Karrmann Library's collections
  • Photocopied material in accordance with copyright laws.
  • Personal items are accepted for Reserve; however, it is necessary for these items to have a barcode attached and a number assigned to them. These items are placed on Reserve at the owner's risk. The library is not responsible for the loss of or damage to the material.

How to place items on Reserve:

  • Bring items for Reserve to the Circulation Desk on the main floor of the library.
  • Complete a Reserve form.
  • Please give first and last name to avoid confusion.
  • Include department, course name and number. Items cannot be processed without this information.
  • Give date when item can be removed from Reserve. This is very important because it helps keep our Reserve collection current.
  • Please give the library the exact title you give your students. Altering the title even slightly can cause delays in locating material.

General Comments

Please allow for processing time when sending over material. Many items are received the first weeks of each semester, so it may take 4 or 5 days before everything gets processed. Requests are handled on a first come, first served basis within regular business hours. Throughout the rest of the semester, items are usually processed within the next two working days.

Most items on Reserve have a loan period of two hours during which the patron may use the material in the library. Reserve materials are not allowed to leave the building unless specified by the professor. If the professor wishes for a loan period other than the regular two hour period, they should specify that on the Reserve form.

E-reserves are not available. Instructors are encouraged to use Canvas.

Textbooks are put on Reserve at the discretion of the Textbook Center located in Doudna Hall. When the supply of a current textbook runs low, the Textbook Center will place the last two copies on Reserve. Not all textbooks are forwarded to the library by the Textbook Center.

The library reserves the right to remove materials that have been inactive for two semesters.
