UW-Platteville International Programs Office offers a number of exchange programs international students at our partner institutions at UW-Platteville for a semester or year. With exchange programs, international students will be enrolled directly with UW-Platteville, take classes side-by-side with students from the US and other international students, and live with students from the US or other international students.
All international exchange students must have:
- Strong academic achievements, comparable to other UW-Platteville applicants, especially in the areas of mathematics, natural science (chemistry, biology or physics), social sciences, and the humanities
- Proficiency in English
- Adequate financial resources for each semester of the program

To apply to UW-Platteville as an international exchange student, please complete the University of Wisconsin System Online Application.

Applications will be considered complete when UW-Platteville receives all of the admission-related documents from the applicant. The application deadline for the fall semester (September–December) is March 1, and the deadline for the spring semester (January-May) is October 1.
The application fee has been waived so currently, there is no application fee to apply.
Please note: the UW-Platteville Academic Calendar includes two 16-week academic semesters; Fall (approximately September 1 through December 20) and Spring (approximately January 15 through May 15).

Transcript
For review and decision purposes only, we will accept international academic records unofficially from you. If you receive your acceptance into the exchange program from UW-Platteville and choose to attend, you will be expected to provide your final official transcripts.
Academic records must be in the original language along with a certified English translation.
- All academic records should include the dates of attendance, level of study, list of subjects, school leaving marks (grades) earned, rank in class (when possible), and the grading system used
- Official records should include all exam or test results and certificates, diplomas or degrees earned. All of these requirements are mandatory and must be official documents
- Photocopies of official records are acceptable if an authorized university, government, or public official has certified them after the documents have been copied

English Proficiency
To gain admissions to the UW-Platteville as an exchange student, all applicants whose native language is not English are required to provide evidence of English Proficiency by either:
- Submitting a completed J-1 Proof of English Proficiency Form completed by your institution/host department including any appropriate test documentation if necessary.
- A recognized English language test. Documentation of test scores showing that EV has taken one of the following tests (taken within the last 2 years):
- TOEFL iBT (64 minimum with sub-scores of at least 15 in Reading and Listening, and sub-scores of at least 17 in Speaking and Writing)
- IELTS (5.5 minimum with at least 5.0 in all sub-scores)
- A minimum TOEFL-ITP score of 550
- Official evidence of passing the TEM-4, plus evidence of passing UW-Platteville’s ELP proficiency test
- Official evidence of receiving a score of 500 or above on the CET-6, plus evidence of passing UW-Platteville’s ELP proficiency test

Additional Requirements
UW-Platteville International Programs Office must receive an official nomination from your host instruction for your application to be considered for the program.
International exchange students will need to submit additional documentation for immigration purposes. These items are not required at the time of admission but will be required to have an DS-2019 issued. You will find additional information for these items in your online account with UW-Platteville. This may include but is not limited to:
- J-1 Exchange Student Financial Verification Form 2024-2025
- Original bank statement (USD) supporting the Financial Verification Form
- UW-Platteville Course Request Form – Incoming Exchange
- Copy of Passport

Selecting Courses at UW-Platteville
International exchange students are required to complete and submit the UW-Platteville Course Request Form – Incoming Exchange. If the UW-Platteville courses you wish to take need approval by your home university or department, please work with your academic advisor before submitting your UW-Platteville exchange application.
Full time students enroll in 12-18 credits per semester. Courses are typically worth 3-5 credits. On average, U.S. students enroll in 12-15 credits per semester. We recommend that when submitting your proposed UW-Platteville courses, that you list 6-8 courses you wish to take.
Once admitted to UW-Platteville, the student will be assigned an academic advisor. UW-Platteville academic advisors will review home university transcripts to ensure that prerequisites are met before enrolling in any UW-Platteville courses. Students will be asked to submit complete course descriptions or syllabi, in English, for any classes taken at the home institution that relate to the classes you plan to take at UW-Platteville.

Visa Information
The DS-2019 form (for issuance of visa) cannot be sent to you until you have been admitted to the university. When your application is complete, your application materials will be reviewed, and you will be notified about your admission status.
Exchange students come to the United States on a student (J-1) visa. To secure a J-1 visa, students must present a DS-2019 form to their American Consulate. This form is sent to the student from the UW-Platteville International Student Advisor. During their entire stay in the United States, students will be held to the conditions of admission located on the DS-2019 form. Before receiving the J-1 visa, a student must satisfy the Consulate regarding financial ability and support while in the United States as well as provide evidence of the purchase of health insurance.
To obtain your J-1 visa, you will need to contact your specific U.S. Embassy or Consulate to establish the process to be followed. Information on U.S. Embassies and Consulates
Proof of health insurance coverage is required as part of your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. An international student medical insurance identification card will be attached to your DS-2019 Form. This form will be generated and sent to you as soon as all of your pre-decision materials in the online application have been received and you have been admitted by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Once you receive the DS-2019 form and insurance card, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to schedule an appointment.

Health Insurance
Documentation/proof that a student has purchased health insurance is required as a part of the visa interview at the Embassy/Consulate. The UW-Platteville mandates that all international exchanges students are enrolled in the University sponsored health insurance.
The UW-Platteville International Student and Scholar Services office will provide exchange students with a proof of insurance card to be presented to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate when applying for the student visa.
Students will be billed for the mandatory health insurance upon arrival at UW-Platteville
