Frequently Asked Questions
Financial Aid
-
How do I apply for Financial Aid?
To apply for any federal or state financial aid programs, you will need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA online is available at https://studentaid.gov/ and must be completed each year. The next year’s application is available each year after October 1st. You will need to create a FSA ID to complete the FAFSA application. If you are a Dependent student, your parent will also need to create a FSA ID.
-
Is there a deadline to apply for financial aid?
FAFSAs must be submitted and processed by the end of the academic year you are looking for aid.
-
When will I know how much aid I can receive?
New Freshman aid packages begin sending in early spring. Continuing student aid packages are sent after spring term grades are received.
-
What is verification?
Verification is the process your school uses to confirm that the data reported on your FAFSA form is accurate. If you’re selected for verification, your school will request additional documentation that supports the information you reported.
-
What is Federal Work Study?
Federal Work Study is a form of financial aid awarded by the federal government and is based on a student's financial need. Work study helps students work part-time to earn money and gain valuable work experience.
Why didn’t my Federal Work Study pay my tuition? Unlike other types of financial aid, work-study earnings are not applied directly to your tuition and fees. Students who are awarded work-study receive the funds in a paycheck as they earn them, based on hours worked, just like a normal job. These earnings are directly deposited into a checking or savings account that a student set up when hired.
-
How do I apply for additional loans?
Information on applying for additional loans is available online at www.uwplatt.edu/department/financial-aid-scholarships/loans.
-
How do I pay tuition housing or meal plans?
Tuition, housing, and meal plans can be covered by financial aid. We will apply all aid by the first day of the semester. As a current student, you can use PeopleSoft Self-service any time to check your balance, review your charges and payments, and make credit and debit card and electronic check payments online. It is a good idea to check your balance online before making a payment because charges and payments may have been added since the last billing.
The Cashier’s Office cannot accept credit card or e-check payments at their office or by mail. Students may bring in check or cash payments to the Cashier’s Office, located on the second floor of Ullsvik Hall Suite 2100. Payments can also be made online through the Cashier’s Office website.
-
How do I receive financial aid in the summer?
Students need to complete the Summer Financial Aid application on our website, which is available starting in April each year. The application details eligibility requirements for summer. Students also need to have a current FAFSA on file.
-
What happens if I drop a class or withdraw?
If considering dropping a class or withdrawing, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 608.342.1836 or finaid@uwplatt.edu to see if it will affect your aid. Due to federal regulations, UW-Platteville is required to verify that you are participating in your courses prior to the census date of each semester.
If you receive any type of federal financial aid (including Federal Direct Loans and/or PLUS Loans) and then withdraw from the university or reduce your credit load, your financial aid eligibility will be re-calculated. A percentage of the aid may be considered unearned and may have to be returned to the funding source and you will be billed for that amount.
-
Where can I find information on billing and payments?
Information on billing, payments, refunds, scholarship checks, and 1098T forms can be found on the Cashier’s Office Frequently Asked Questions webpage.

How do I get started?
To get started, view the opportunities offered by clicking on the Scholarship Application button on the scholarship webpage, then click on the Sign In button at the top right of the page. On the Welcome Page, click the Log in with your UWPlatt Single Sign-On button and log on using your UW-Platteville NetID and Password (first year and transfer students – this will be your username provided by the admissions office when you were admitted).
Complete the General Application and other supplemental applications requested by the system. You may save your work and come back to your application later if you wish. It is highly recommended that you save your application after you enter each essay question. The system can time out and your data may be lost if you haven’t saved.
-
What type of questions are on the General Application?
Your academic record and demographic information are automatically pulled into the scholarship portal.
You are asked for information regarding leadership, community service, extra-curricular activities, work experience, financial/academic hardships, and career goals. Potential apply-to essay questions may include why you chose UW-Platteville, your goals, challenges you’ve overcome, why you are seeking financial assistance, and reference information.
-
Do I need to complete every section in the General Application?
No, the questions about financial/academic hardships and your career goals are not a requirement.
The UW-Platteville scholarship process is very competitive. It is in your best interest to submit as complete of an application as possible to provide reviewers with as much information about yourself to be considered for scholarships.
-
What happens after I complete the General Application?
Students will match to scholarships based on their UW-Platteville student record information and completed General Application in two ways:
- Auto-Match Scholarships do not have any additional questions beyond the General Applications. Applicants are matched automatically if they satisfy the qualifications and no further action is required. You will not be able to see these matches in your Recommended Opportunities, but your application will be forwarded to the committee(s) administering each scholarship.
- Apply-to Scholarships require additional items (like an additional essay or a reference) for you to be considered. When you’re signed in, apply-to scholarships will appear in your list of Recommended Opportunities (once you have fully submitted your General Application), and an "Apply” button will be available under the Actions column. You must submit a scholarship-specific application and any additional information requested to be considered.
To view scholarships recommended for you after you have submitted your application, sign and click Recommended under Opportunities in the drop-down menu. Please note that qualifying and/or applying does not guarantee that you will be offered a scholarship.
-
When will I receive notice about scholarships I have applied to?
This timeline varies from scholarship to scholarship. Once the scholarship has met the priority deadline, reviewers will begin evaluating applications. Once reviewing is complete and recipients are selected, recipients will be notified by email. The scholarship will be added to the recipient’s financial aid package in PASS. Notification to unawarded students will be sent after all recipients have been selected and notified.
