CARES Act
Federal Emergency Grants for Students
The federal government has provided emergency aid for college students nationwide who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. UW-Platteville has received nearly $2.7 million through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to help students who are struggling with expenses such as food, housing, medical expenses, course materials, and childcare after campus operations were disrupted by the virus.
To qualify for CARES Act funds a student must be Title IV-eligible, they must have be enrolled in at least one on-campus course, and they must have been financially impacted by the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus.

Funding Certification and Agreement Form
UW-Platteville signed and returned the Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the CARES Act Certification and Agreement form on April 10, 2020 and was notified that it had been federally funded through a Department of Education Grant Award Notification on April 22, 2020. On September 10, 2020 UW-Platteville expended CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students, and transferred an additional $300,000 from CARES Act Institutional Funding to be used for Emergency Financial Aid Grants for students. By doing so, UW-Platteville will use a total of $2,696,335 for student emergency grants through the Pioneers Helping Pioneers emergency grant program.

Mandatory Funding Reporting
The Department of Education required an initial report 30-days after receipt of funding from the Department and an updated report every 45-days thereafter. In an August 31, 2020 Federal Register notice the Department of Education amended their guidance to require a quarterly update to funding statistics in lieu of 45-day updates. Quarterly updates to funding statistics will be made on October 10, 2020; January 10, 2021; April 10, 2021; and, July 10, 2021.
To satisfy that requirement and in the interests of transparency UW-Platteville reports our funding statistics on a weekly basis. Our mandatory reporting figures are below.

How UW-Platteville Determines Student Eligibility
Eligibility Criteria:
- Enrolled in 6 or more credit hours; consideration given to those enrolled in less than 6 credit hours on a case-by-case basis.
- Students who have previously received a Pioneers Helping Pioneers grant of $500 or less through current process are eligible for up to the $1,000 maximum grant threshold.
- Students who do not meet CARES Act eligibility will have same access to Pioneers Helping Pioneers Grant support, however, we will ensure alternative funds are utilized
- Students are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in a Pioneers Helping Pioneers grant during any one academic year unless significant extenuating circumstances warrant a committee decision to increase the award.

How To Apply
To receive funds through the CARES Act, a student must complete the Pioneers Helping Pioneers emergency grant application. Once complete, a student service representative will contact them with further directions.
