Student Services
The Career and Professional Development Office offers access to resources and opportunities to help students explore potential careers; network with employers; prepare for interviews; and secure employment, internships, and work experiences.
Employer Meet & Greet
Employer Information Sessions
Typically, an hour in length, employer information sessions are informative presentations that provide an opportunity for students to learn more about a prospective employer, meet company recruiters, and explore career options.
Employer information sessions allow students to gain insight about the employer's history, mission and goals, training programs, products and services, and management styles. Students will have the chance to develop a networking system by talking with company representatives, and they will be able to meet recruiters in a more informal environment, outside of the formal interview setting.
Any UW-Platteville student interested in learning more about a specific employer would benefit from attending an employer information session. Students interviewing with an employer that schedules an employer information session are required to attend the session.
Business casual attire or interview formal is recommended.
To find out about upcoming sessions, log into your Handshake student/alumni account. Click on “Events” to see all of the upcoming events.
Special restrictions may apply to some employers who schedule an information session. If restrictions exist, they will be posted on Handshake.
Informational Interviews
Informational interviews are one of the best sources to gather information on a specific career. These interviews are conducted in person, by telephone or e-mail. Remember, the purpose of an informational interview is to obtain information, NOT to get a job.
Internships
An internship is a partnership between the student, employer and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. It is structured educational experience, which incorporates productive work experience as a regular part of a college student's curriculum.
Through this experience, students are provided the opportunity to improve their basic work skills, explore career choices, develop professional competence, and witness classroom theories and principles being applied in real world situations.
Job Shadowing
Job Shadowing is an opportunity for a student to connect with or “shadow” a business professional (job shadowing mentor) who has specific knowledge about an occupation or career in which the student is interested. During the experience, the student will observe the mentor’s responsibilities and tasks. The student will have the opportunity to ask questions about the knowledge, skills, talents, and level of education required for the job.
While the purpose of job shadowing is to gather career-related information and expand networking contacts, it also allows the student to build interviewing skills, become aware of trends in the field, and see workforce technologies in action. Multiple job shadowing experiences may be arranged for students interested in exploring a variety of career paths.
Mock Interviews
Mock interviews allow students to practice their interviewing skills and gain insight into the interviewing process.
Online Job Search
There are many online job sites that can serve as valuable resources during a job search. As many job sites require users to have an up-to date resume to complete a profile, it’s important to have a resume prepared in advance. When choosing a job search site, make sure the website is secure and credible prior to submitting personal information. Also, be aware that some job search sites require membership as well.
