Awards and Nominations
Each year, the College of EMS honors several exemplary faculty and staff with one of the awards listed below.
Faculty and staff may nominate EMS personnel for all four awards.
- EMS Excellence in Academic Advising Award
- EMS Excellence in Research and Scholarly Activities Award
- EMS Excellence in Teaching Award
- Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award
Students may nominate EMS faculty and staff for the following awards:
- EMS Excellence in Academic Advising Award
- EMS Excellence in Teaching Award

EMS Excellence in Academic Advising Award
The Excellence in Academic Advising Award recognizes any member of the faculty or academic staff who has served as an academic advisor to students in the College of EMS in the current academic year. The award recipient is then ineligible for the succeeding three years.
To be considered for this award, candidates must demonstrate qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding academic advisor, such as:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Frequency of contact with advisees
- Appropriate referral activity
- Use and dissemination of appropriate information sources
- Caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty and staff
- Availability to advisees, faculty or staff
- Evidence of student success rate, by advisor or department
- Advisee or unit evaluations (summary data)
- Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
- Participation in and support of intrusive advising to build strong relationships with advisees
- Mastery of institutional regulations, policies and procedures
- Ability to engage in, promote and support developmental advising
- Participation in and support of advisor development programs
- Perception by colleagues of nominee’s advising skills
The following documentation is also required:
- A condensed vitae of the nominee (maximum of three pages). If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for the vitae.
- A one- to two-page statement by the nominee on his or her effectiveness in advising, dedication, and innovation with supporting documentation limited to 10 pages. If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for a statement.
- Three letters of support: At least one letter of support must be from a UW-Platteville faculty or staff member qualified to comment on the candidate’s advising abilities, and at least one letter of support must be from a current or past student.
The recipient of this award will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and his/her name inscribed on the permanent college plaque.

EMS Excellence in Teaching Award
The Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes any member of the faculty or academic staff who has served as an instructor for classes in the College of EMS during the current academic year. The award recipient is then ineligible for the succeeding three years.
To be considered for this award, candidates must demonstrate qualities and practices from the following three criteria:
- Effectiveness in Teaching – Examples may include evidence of learning by students; challenging and relevant assignments; rigor and fairness in grading; good communication skills.
- Dedication – Examples may include evidence of exemplary instructional materials; availability to students; careful grading of students’ work; encouragement and concern for all students including the disadvantaged; evidence of effort to work on self-improvement and professional development.
- Innovation – Examples may include evidence of effort to improve the quality of education; introduction of innovative teaching methods; publication of papers on innovative teaching methods.
The following documentation is also required:
- A condensed vitae of the nominee (maximum of three pages). If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for the vitae.
- A one- to two-page statement by the nominee on his or her effectiveness in teaching, dedication, and innovation with supporting documentation limited to ten pages (may include course syllabi, handouts, descriptions of evaluation methods, examinations, grants received for teaching/course development, video tapes, etc.). If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for a statement.
- Three letters of support: At least one letter of support must be from a UW-Platteville faculty or staff member qualified to comment on the candidate’s teaching abilities, and at least one letter of support must be from a current or past student.
The recipient of this award will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and his/her name inscribed on the permanent college plaque.

EMS Excellence in Research and Scholarly Activities Award
The Excellence in Research and Scholarly Activities Award recognizes a College of EMS faculty or academic staff member who has pursued research and/or scholarly activities during the current academic year.
The award recipient is then ineligible for the succeeding three years.
To be considered for this award, candidates must demonstrate qualities and practices from the following five criteria:
- Research Accomplishment – Publication of original research papers in professional journals; principal investigator in externally funded research projects; recipient of awards from professional societies; involvement of students in externally funded research projects.
- Funding Development – Participation in externally funded research projects; participation in a summer faculty research program funded by the federal government or other agencies; internal (UW-Platteville) funding, e.g., SAIF.
- Publication – Textbooks; final reports on funded research projects; papers in conference proceedings.
- Consulting – Impact on the university community; impact on industry.
- Effort – Submitted proposals; high level involvement in a professional society; attendance at technical conferences, short courses, and workshops; advisor to student research projects outside the teaching environment; reviewer of technical papers and textbooks.
The following documentation is also required:
- A condensed vitae of the nominee (maximum of three pages). If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for the vitae.
- A one- to two-page statement by the nominee documenting accomplishments for the current academic year in one or more of the following areas: research accomplishment, funding development, publication, consulting, and effort. If the nominator wishes to remain anonymous, the College of EMS will contact the nominee for a statement.
- Three letters of support, including at least one from a UW-Platteville faculty or staff member qualified to comment on the quality of the candidate’s research and professional development activities.
The recipient of this award will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque, and his/her name inscribed on the permanent college plaque.

Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award
The Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award was established by Dr. Dale Dixon, a former engineering department chair in the College of EMS to celebrate engineering faculty excellence. On an annual basis, a three-year award of $5,000 per year (for a total of $15,000) will be awarded to an engineering faculty member to be used for summer salary, professional development, research, and/or student salaries.
The recipient of the Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award will:
- Be recognized during the fall College Meeting with a commemorative plaque and have his/her name engraved on the permanent Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award plaque (located in 020 OTT until Sesquicentennial Hall opens)
- Receive a total of $15,000 over a three-year period
- Compose a personal thank-you card, upon the conclusion of the third year, which includes an explanation of the benefits gained by the faculty member and/or students (e.g., personal and/or professional development and its impact upon the college, the learning experience gained by the students) to be delivered to the Dale Dixon family by the EMS Development Officer
- Remain ineligible for the award for the succeeding three years
The following criteria will be considered in the selection of the recipient of the Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering:
- A tenured engineering faculty member in the College of EMS
- Evidence of actively working to support the college’s vision and mission (see statements below)
- Currently engaged in research and/or scholarly activities (e.g., externally funded projects, research with undergraduate students)
- Alignment with rubric
The application must include the following:
- An essay
- How you meet the criteria
- Your plan for the award, if received
- An explanation of the anticipated benefits gained by you and/or your students
- A detailed three-year budget
