Opened in April 2002, and dedicated to former Chancellor David J. Markee and his wife, Lou Ann, in 2011, the Markee Pioneer Student Center and Dining Services Administration, also known as the Student Center, is unique to the UW System having been built to meet the combined need for a technology center and a student center. The Student Center features a wide variety of services, programs, and conveniences for the campus community including; the Pioneer Haus pub, Pioneer Crossing food court, and the Pioneer Perk coffee and snack shop. The Student Center hosts events ranging from national touring acts to educational and recreational conferences to student organizations and university departments meetings. The University Bookstore, Pioneer Involvement Center, Dining and Campus Card office, Information Center, Doyle Center for Gender and Sexuality, and Multicultural Student Affairs are also conveniently located at the Student Center, as is the Bears Den computer lab, and a mixture of formal and informal meeting spaces and lounges. An anchor of community life on the campus, the Student Center is home to numerous artifacts of the university, such as the Platteville Normal School bell located at the south entrance and the Heritage Hall Mural, depicting historic buildings, seals, and the "M" mound of the university.
