Requests for residence life accommodations are facilitated through UW-Platteville’s Disability Access Center. DAC collects and reviews all disability documentation as it relates to both residence hall and academic accommodations. Once documentation is submitted and meets our documentation guidelines, it will be reviewed by the Residence Life Accommodation Committee. Please note that the deadline for priority consideration for fall is June 1st and spring is November 1st.

Submitting an accommodation request does not guarantee approval. It is also important to note that a medical condition does not necessarily qualify a student for accommodations or guarantee a specific accommodation. Additionally, residence hall accommodations are based on disability-related needs, not requests to live in a specific residence hall. Not all residence halls are able to accommodate students in the same way. If a student's top choices for residence halls are already filled or are unable to meet the student's disability-related needs, the student will be assigned to another residence hall.

Students should follow this process to apply for residence life accommodations:

  1. Student completes the standard residence life application process by logging into their UW-Platteville PASS account. More information about this process can be found by visiting Residence Life Room Selection.
  2. Student must also separately apply for services through the Disability Access Center.
  3. Student should submit documentation of a disability. Documentation can be uploaded with your DAC application or faxed to 608.342.1918.
  4. The disability specialist will review the documentation and determine if it meets eligibility guidelines or if additional documentation is required.
  5. If it meets guidelines the Residence Life Accommodation Committee then reviews all requests for residence life accommodations. The Committee normally meets one or two times per month.
  6. If approved, the student, DAC, and Residence Life staff are notified by email of approval. If denied, the student is informed of denial and next steps. The student is required to complete an intake meeting with a disability specialist.

Possible accommodations/modifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Air Conditioner - can also be requested for a charge by emailing reslife@uwplatt.edu. Window units are available in our traditional halls.
  • Extra refrigerator
  • Bed shaker/alarms
  • Other accommodations as appropriate to provide equal access

It is recommended that all requests be made at least eight weeks prior to the start of the semester. If you do not request your residential living accommodation in a timely manner, you may experience a delay and/or be unable to receive the requested accommodation. Refer to Residence Life regarding room contracts and assignments.

Requests are generally denied for three reasons:

  • Documentation does not indicate a substantial limitation to a major life activity (i.e., the student does not have a disability).
  • The disability-related need does not require an alteration to the living environment. For example, students with ADHD, learning disabilities, or psychological disabilities who request a private room to have a quiet study area can have that need met through use of the libraries and other spaces around campus that are suitable for quiet study.
  • A student makes a late request for a room that is no longer available. To avoid this situation, it is imperative that you contact Residence Life and DAC as soon as you believe you will need a housing accommodation.

Email dac@uwplatt.edu or call us at 608.342.1818 if you have any questions and remember, all of our halls are great places to live and build community.
