General Education Requirements for a Bachelor of Art Degree
A University of Wisconsin-Platteville education consists of two main components: general education and the academic major. General Education provides a broad foundation of knowledge and skills; the academic major focuses on the knowledge and skills of a specific field. When choosing courses to fulfill your general education requirements, consider topics you already have an interest in to complement your degree related courses.
Requirements listed below are from the current year catalog. Your requirements (39-56 credits) are subject to the catalog that was in effect at the time you were admitted. Your academic advisor can help guide you in determining which courses will meet your degree requirements.

Competency Requirements (12-15 credits)
The competency requirements are met by taking approved courses in the areas of communication (English composition (6-7 cr) and speech (3 cr)), mathematics (3 cr), wellness (1 cr), physical activity (1 cr) and foreign language (waived for online).

Social Sciences (6 credits)
Courses must be taken from two different disciplines from approved courses in agriculture, media, criminal justice, economics, energy, ethnic studies, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, speech, and women’s and gender studies.

Natural Sciences (4 credits)
Course must be selected from the approved listing.

Global Studies (0-3 credits)
At least three credits must be taken to satisfy the global studies requirement. Other liberal arts courses may also be designated as global studies.

Ethnic Studies (3 credits)
Students can take one three-credit course counting for both ethnic and gender studies or take six credits, one three credit course counting for ethnic studies and one three credit course counting for gender studies. Alternatively, other liberal arts courses may be designated as ethnic or gender studies.

Gender Studies (3 credits)
Students can take one three-credit course counting for both ethnic and gender studies or take six credits, one three credit course counting for ethnic studies and one three credit course counting for gender studies. Alternatively, other liberal arts courses may be designated as ethnic or gender studies.

Additional (6 credits)
Students must complete additional six credits in two difference areas (Fine Arts, Historical Perspectives, or Humanities) courses numbered 2000 or higher. Refer to course listings above.
