Aspiring Educators provides outdoor gear to Platteville children in need

Last semester, the UW-Platteville Aspiring Educators organization was awarded a grant by the National Education Association to purchase outdoor gear for children in need in the Platteville School District. The student group recently completed the grant work when they delivered the coats, snow pants, hats, mittens and more to the school.

More than a dozen students traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border in January to participate in the TRIO, Student Support Services Border Immersion Trip to El Paso, Texas. Throughout the trip, students met with refugees, lawyers, federal agencies and nonprofit organizations to learn more about immigration policies and the legal system.

Almost nine in 10 students in this year's freshman class applied for a BaraBOOST scholarship at UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County, according to the Friends of the Campus Foundation that supports the UW-Platteville branch campus in Baraboo. The $1,000 minimum scholarship is available to every new enrolled full-time freshman student who applies.


Gordon contributes to release of new edition of 1948 novel

Dr. Phillip Gordon, associate professor of English, has helped facilitate the release of a new edition of a 1948 novel, “The Welcome,” by Hubert Creekmore. The novel, which has been out of print for more than 50 years, is being re-issued by the University Press of Mississippi this week and includes an introduction by Gordon.

Junior Scott McDermott has worked part-time at John Deere in a student position since 2021 while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree.
