The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s philosophy program has been named to Great Value Colleges’ ranking of the 100 Great Value Colleges for a bachelor’s in philosophy for 2020.
According to Great Values Colleges, UW-Platteville, which placed 18th, was selected “not only for the program’s affordability but also for the institution’s overall outstanding reputation, its faculty’s excellence, and the unerring commitment to providing non-traditional students a high-quality education and in doing so, giving them all the tools that they need to achieve their future career goals.”
To develop its ranking of the best colleges for philosophy, Great Values Colleges began with a pool of 155 colleges and universities in the United States offering philosophy degree programs for less than $20,000 per year in tuition costs. To further narrow the pool, they applied a Return on Investment filter, eliminating schools with 20-year ROIs of less than $145,000, according to Payscale.com. In cases of a tie, the more affordable school, in terms of net price, received the higher rating.
“As a small program, it is encouraging to be recognized for the great value we provide our students,” said Dr. Shane Drefcinski, chair of the Department of Humanities at UW-Platteville. “The Department of Humanities currently offers two majors (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) and a minor in philosophy. The majors were recently redesigned so that students can complement their coursework in philosophy with other disciplines, such as professional writing, business, criminal justice, STEM, etc. In this way, students can combine their interest in philosophy with an area more directly tied to their future careers.”
